Apple Dental is Chosen as Best Dentist of the South Coast for the Third Year in a Row!

Our dental office is so excited! We just received the announcement that we’ve been named as The World’s Best Dentist for the third year in a row. Every year The World publishes its list of the Best of the South Coast. There are all sorts of categories that are announced, such as the Best Pizza Restaurant, the Best Jeweler and the Best Auto Parts store. And when the 2014 edition of the awards issue comes out, Above Dental will be listed as one of the area’s Best Dentists yet again!

What makes this announcement so special is that the ‘Best Of’ Favorites isn’t a list of businesses that are picked out of a hat. Instead, a business must be nominated by the great people of the South Coast.

In other words, this wasn’t a multiple-choice questionnaire that people had to fill out. In order to be nominated, readers of The World needed to submit a hand-written note that lists the business in question. That means that Above Dental was voted as Best Dentist by the local community, and that’s pretty exciting!

We’d like to thank everyone who voted for making our series of nominations possible. And if you’ve never been here before, we invite you to schedule an appointment today to discover exactly why we’ve been voted as Best Dentist in Coos Bay and North Bend for the third year running.

Our Own Dr. Brice Made the News And He Wants Your Halloween Candy

Our very own Dr. Devin Brice made the local news. Here’s the story:

NORTH BEND, Ore. — A local dentist in North Bend is after your Halloween candy, but he’s no bully.
Dr. Devin Brice will pay $1 for every pound of Halloween candy received at his office Saturday.
The candy he collects will be sent to U.S. troops overseas and the kid who brings in the most candy will take home a $150, with an additional $150 sent to charity.
You can take your candy to the Above Dental Office on Virginia in North Bend Saturday between 2-5 p.m.

7 Serious Health Problems: Indicators Your Dentist Can Spot

7 Serious Health Problems

You can call us Dental Detectives if you want because Dr. Brice, your top-notch dentist for North Bend OR is trained to spot more than just cavities and get to the bottom of it. Specific peculiarities sometimes show up in gum tissue and teeth that signal to us a serious health condition may exist elsewhere in your body. To be forewarned is to be forearmed, wouldn’t you say?

A recent study showed people with serious gum disease were 40% more likely to also have a chronic health condition.

Gum Disease and Your Heart:  If we discover you have gum disease and your family’s history includes heart disease or stroke, we suggest your medical doctor be updated about our findings.  Why? Scientists are discovering that bacteria from infected gums can travel and block the arteries.

It’s actually been reported that up to 91% of patients with heart disease also have periodontitis (gum disease).

Diabetes:  Infections at your gum line can worsen diabetes by weakening the body’s ability to control blood sugar. We can help you stay on top of gum disease by offering more frequent cleanings. Some were unaware they had diabetes until their dentist pointed out that bleeding gums, loose teeth, and slow post-procedure healing times were indicators of the disease.

Dementia:  Maintaining sound oral health at home is essential. For the elderly in particular, regular professional exams and cleanings are crucial. Scientists at the University of California followed more than 5,000 elderly people over 18 years and discovered that those who brushed their teeth less than once a day were up to 65% more likely to develop dementia.

Bruxism (teeth grinding): Signs of premature wear and fractures to your teeth alert our dental team you may need a custom mouth guard to protect your teeth and jaws from damage while you sleep.

Osteoporosis: Changes in the bone supporting your teeth (showing up as a receding gum line and loose teeth sometimes) may have us suggesting you be tested for osteoporosis.

Nighttime Reflux: Reflux of stomach juices can unknowingly occur while you sleep. If we see erosion in your upper back molars we can alert you of the possibility. It could save not only your teeth but possibly help prevent esophagus erosion or cancer!

Premature & Low-Weight Births: Gum disease can trigger an increase in a chemical compound called prostaglandin and other harmful inflammatory molecules that induce early labor and impair fetal growth. Let us help you reduce that harmful bacteria sooner rather than later!

National Dental Hygiene Month – Reviewing Your Dental Routine!

National Dental Hygiene Month in North Bend

At our Coos Bay dental clinic, we think of October as a month for cozying back into comfy routines. What’s this about “Dental Hygiene Month

Back-to-School with a Stylin’ Smile

Kids Smile

Parents! Sharpen those pencils! It’s time to see if you’ve tackled that back-to-school list to completion. You got the notebooks, pens, backpack, and new shoes…but did you remember to book an appointment with your family dentist in Coos Bay?

We Share the Care

Not only can hearing and eyesight degrade within a school-year, but oral health too. Our dental practice wants to team up with you to ensure your child’s teeth are:

  • Coming in as they should.
  • Benefiting from the brushing style they’ve adopted at home.
  • Not exposed unnecessarily to the risk of cavities. We offer preventive measures like sealants on molars or fluoride varnish protection to help.
  • Not showing signs of health issues beyond cavities such as diabetes and vitamin deficiencies.

Every child should engage others with their best smile as they head back to school, and an A+ oral health report keep them there. Since dental disease is almost 100% preventable, what part will you play?

Tips for the Brilliant Parent

According to the American Dental Association, children miss about 51 million school hours and parents lose 25 million work hours annually because of oral diseases.

Here’s how you can avoid being a statistic:

Toothbrush Enthusiasm: Have a peek at your child’s toothbrush—are the bristles frayed? Every three months, it should be replaced…but let THEM choose ones THEY like. As long as it’s the proper size and has soft bristles, does it matter that Spiderman shapes the handle?

Toothpaste Flavor—Yum! You may like minty fresh, but most kids don’t. Choose a few ADA approved child-friendly flavors and see what goes over best. The more they like it, the better chance you have of getting them to use it.

Flossing Failure? Let’s admit it; flossing is annoying to adults, let alone children. Make it more appealing by considering floss picks. They’re easier to use and come in fun colors and flavors.

It’s Not a Race: Two minutes is about how long it takes for a proper cleaning, so purchasing a fun-looking brushing timer may well be a good investment.

What’s to Eat? Acidic beverages such as fruit juice and soda erode tooth enamel. Gummy, soft sweets stick to teeth and allow bacteria in plaque to produce more detrimental acid. Bite-sized carrots, fruits, nuts, cheese, and bottled water pass the grade, and provide great fuel for physical exertion! Also, encourage a quick rinse and spit at the water fountain—it can do wonders when a toothbrush isn’t handy.

Impact Sports—Ouch! Fall is the time for many contact sports. Be sure to have your child properly fitted for a mouthguard and avoid having their teeth join the 3 million knocked out each year!

Did You Pass?

If you saw a few areas you need to brush up on, don’t feel bad. Our dental practice loves families like you and is here to help! Start a positive tradition by scheduling a back-to-school dental appointment with Dr. Brice— your family dentist in Coos Bay. We’ll help send your child back to school with a reason to smile proudly.

Care to share? What tips can you give other parents that have made brushing more fun for your kids?
