How Can I Keep My Teeth Healthy Without Visiting the Dentist?
While we encourage everybody to work the dentist into their schedule, we know for our once-in-a-while patients, that’s just not always going to happen.
So while you’re in between dental visits, here are some things you can do to keep your mouth in good shape:
1. Watch the sugary foods.
Your mouth is home to benign, naturally occurring bacteria. While a little bit of bacteria isn’t anything to worry about, if they get too comfortable, that’s when problems begin.
The number one way to make sure bacteria doesn’t overstay its welcome? By limiting sugary foods.
Sugar is bacteria’s favorite food. It allows bacteria to multiply, and when bacteria multiply too far, too fast, they form plaque – the same plaque that wears down at your teeth, eats away at your enamel, which forms cavities.
2. Brush twice daily.
And don’t cheat. Even if you don’t eat sugary foods, plaque can still do a number on your enamel if left unchecked. Brushing thoroughly every morning – and every night – is the first thing to do to keep oral bacteria at bay.
In a perfect world, our patients would floss thoroughly after every meal. Because it directly targets the plaque lining your teeth, it’s just as important as brushing. Our advice? Make flossing the second part of your nightly mouth care routine.
Comprehensive Dentistry with a Smile
Our dental team takes a modern, holistic approach to making your mouth as healthy and clean as possible.
We examine every potential source of problems that could manifest down the line – your teeth, your gums, your unique jaw mechanics, and even the less-talked-about soft tissue such as your tongue and cheeks.
A high-level examination of your mouth can tell us a lot about your health, and prevent future problems.
